We honor Loretta, a quiet, reserved woman of keen intellect, boundless energy, impulsive wit and creative spirit. She left us this summer --leaving a legacy of fond personal memories and enriching contributions to life in Point Lookout Loretta, with Ann Cavanagh, founded this art show in 1969 as a part of the artistic mission of the Point Lookout Community Theatre. For years that group provided the foundation for the arts in our community. Never one to seek the limelight, (she left that to aspiring actor-husband Marty), Loretta created and filled the roles of property master, costume designer and seamstress of the troupe. Her magic wand reached everywhere, transforming other voids into marvelous creations such as the Puppet show, a wonderful, mystical endeavor enjoyed by children and adults alike. She envisioned too, a beautiful Lido Boulevard, yet to be completely fulfilled. Her accomplishments in the name of beauty and art were mirrored in other endeavors as well. She and her husband Marty founded the first Pre-cana Conference for Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal church counseling engaged couples about the joy and travails of married life. This work continued for twenty-five years. A woman for all seasons, Loretta was a founding member of the Ladies League of the Lido Golf Club and Treasurer of the Wm. Dawes Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served on the board of The Long Beach Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary and was the Volunteer Manager of the Long Beach Medical Center Thrift Shop "One More Time" which in a ten year span raised close to a half a million dollars for the hospital. Loretta was an accomplished artist, sculptor and poet, a master gardener, accomplished chef and a warm and gracious hostess. Nor were entrepreneurial skills beyond her reach. In the 1980s she co-owned the North Shore Art Gallery. But the devotion and compassion she applied to her external world paled in comparison to her nurturing role as a mother, grandmother and spouse. Loretta was a loyal and loving wife to Marty, a committed and caring mother to Jean, Suzi, Noel and Matthew, a friend and supporter of her son-in-law Peter and daughters-in-law Glennis and Elizabeth and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren. She leaves her friends and family with happy memories of a life well lived. RMD 2005 |
