Cornell Men's Hockey to Auction All-Time Great Jerseys for Charity

ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell men's ice hockey will be holding a silent auction for the special red third jerseys that were worn in last Saturday's 7-1 win over Sacred Heart. The jerseys feature the names of the greatest player to ever wear each number, as voted by the 2004-05 team.

An all-time great was selected for every number between one and 31, except 13, which traditionally has not been worn by Cornell players. There will be two number 25 jerseys, both signed by NHL star Joe Nieuwendyk.

The following procedure will be followed for the silent auction of the jerseys. The opening bid for each will be $150. Further bids may be submitted to Sue Detzer in the hockey office via email (sld6@cornell.edu) or by fax at 607-254-5351. NO PHONE CALLS will be accepted.

Sometime on Thursday evening, Sue will send an email or fax to all persons who have bid on a particular jersey with the current high bid. Bidding will continue through the day on Friday with another update on the highest bid available at a table set up in the hallway between Lynah Rink and Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. At that time, persons who have not already bid, may submit their email address or fax number to be included in Saturday's final update.

The last bids will be accepted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, NO EXCEPTIONS. At that point, the highest bids for each jersey will be compiled and a final email or fax will go out between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. with the current high bid. Anyone still interested will need to submit a final, blind bid by 2 p.m. Saturday with the jersey going to the highest bidder.

Winners will be announced during the first intermission of Saturday night's ECAC Hockey League game against Brown. Due to staffing concerns, we will not be able to take payment and distribute the jerseys on Saturday night. Sue will contact winners during the week of Nov. 8 to set up payment and pick up or shipment of the jerseys.

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Ithaca Breast Cancer Alliance and the American Hockey Coaches Association "Hockey Coaches Care" fund. The Hockey Coaches Care fund has been designed to help a coach or family member or other member of the greater amateur hockey community who is ill or injured in an accident, has lost a job or in some other way has come upon hard times.
